Job Description for the Emergency Response Technician

Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly committed employee for the position of Emergency Response Technician – FS (Fixed Term) to join the Project Team. We are in search of an individual who can champion Barrick’s DNA by:

Reporting to the Supervisor – Emergency Response, you will be responsible for providing expedient and effective emergency services (in Fire Fighting, Rope Rescue, Vehicle Rescue, Hazmat, Confine Space Rescue, working at Height and Ambulance services) and also maintenance of emergency equipment across site in order to minimize personal injury/suffering, equipment/environmental damage and loss of production in the event of an incident or accident within Lumwana Mining Company site / Lease area, township and community.

Your duties  as Emergency Response Technician will include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Respond to all Emergency situations across site if called upon in a timely and effective manner, in order to minimize personal injury/suffering, damage to property/environment, or loss of production.
  • Attend all Clinics in a confidential and professional manner.
  • Attend training programs to ensure optimum skill levels.
  • Participate in ongoing education and awareness of BLS skills.
  • Be aware of and carry out Fitness for Work testing and Education.
  • Able to conduct Pre-starts on all ER equipment and operate emergency appliances competently.
  • Undertake all duties as directed by Supervisor which include inspections and maintenance of Fire / Rescue equipment in line with company values, policies and procedures
  • Adherence to safe work procedures and promote high health/safety awareness in compliance with the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy.
  • Conducting weekly standard tests on specialized ER equipment and compile reports outlining general status / functionality for the attention of Supervisor in order to rectify any recorded faults.
  • All other tasks as directed by the Supervisor.

To be considered for the position(Emergency Response Technician), you must meet the following requirements:

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate
  • Minimum of two (2) years post qualification experience in rescue and emergency services in the mining industry
  • Certificate in Mine rescue and emergency services – ERT Core disciplines (Fire, Road Accident Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, Rope rescue, Confined space Rescue, Hazardous Material and Medical Rescue)
  • Certificate (s) in Fire Technology Systems (Detection and Suppression) or Emergency Response Services.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) qualification – Basic Life Support or Chamber of Mines First Aid Certificate
  • Good computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet applications. (Microsoft packages)
  • Valid Zambian/SADC Driving Licence – Class C.

About the Team

The Lumwana copper mine is a conventional open pit (truck and shovel) operation. It’s located about 100 kilometers west of Solwezi in Zambia’s Copperbelt — one of the most prospective copper regions in the world. Lumwana ore, which is predominantly sulfide, is treated through a conventional sulfide flotation plant, producing copper concentrate.
